Vertical Preparation; To Embrace or Disgrace

Abstract: Recently, the concept of Vertical Preparation or Verti-prep is gaining increased popularity & enthusiasm among clinicians. The trend has already reached momentum to the extent that clinicians still doing preps with definite finish lines are sometimes blamed for not being up to date. Terms like ‘Shoulder-less”, “edge-less” and “Biologically Oriented Preparation Technique BOPT” are being used by clinicians with great confusion & non-specificity. This lecture is a critical appraisal of the technique and its underlying philosophy, benefits, limitations and possible complications. Being involved in both clinical and lab workflow, the speaker discusses both clinical and laboratory aspects relevant to the technique.

Objectives: 1- Disambiguation of some of the terms frequently used by clinicians for coverage restorations.
2- The underlying philosophy of the vertical preparation technique.
3- Evaluation of the clinical benefits that could be associated with vertical preparation technique.
4- Laboratory steps involved in the technique and their potential effects on the used materials.
5- Limitations and possible complications of the vertical preparation technique.
