Temporomandibular disorders (TMDs) represent a wide range of conditions affecting the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), masticatory muscles, and associated structures. As a conservative and reversible therapeutic approach, the use of occlusal splints plays a pivotal role in TMD management. A variety of splints is described in the literature and the dentist must ensure that the splint prescribed is of a design that has a proven success rate for the specific diagnosis.
Recent evidence points towards the effectiveness of occlusal splints in the management of myofascial pain, bruxism-related symptoms, and TMJ disc displacements. However, patient-specific factors, such as the aetiology, severity, and chronicity of TMDs, alongside patient compliance, significantly influence treatment outcomes.
This lecture reviews the various applications and indications of occlusal splints in the management of TMDs. General principles and protocols that apply to the provision of all splints will be also outlined.
