Egypt is known as a transcontinental country due to the fact that it lies on both Africa and Asia. The Sinai Peninsula connects southwest Asia to northeast Africa, and it is part of the country of Egypt. Most of the country lies in Africa though. Egypt is bordered by Palestine to the north, the Red Sea in the east, Sudan in the south and Libya in the west. It is very populated, and is home to 95 million people, making it the 15th most populous country in the world. Its capital city is Cairo. The official language of the country is Arabic and its state religion is Islam. The currency is Egypt is the Egyptian pound, and it has been used in the country since the early 1800s.
The Giza Necropolis is one of Egypt’s best-known tourist attractions; it is the only one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient World still in existence. The Egyptian Pyramids are thought to have been inspired by the rays of Sun. |
Egypt’s beaches on the Mediterranean and the Red Sea, which extend to over 3,000 kilometres (1,900 miles), are also popular tourist destinations; the Gulf of Aqababeaches, Safaga, Sharm el-Sheikh, Hurghada, Luxor, Dahab, Ras Sidr and Marsa Alam are popular sites.
Egypt controls the Suez Canal, which links the Mediterranean Sea with the Indian Ocean.
Egypt is known primarily for its deserts, pyramids, and the Nile River, which is the longest river in the world.
